Now Read This: A review by Bill Hudgins published in Semper Fi magazine.
"Breach is a wonderfully written story of young Marines struggling to
pull themselves together under the duress of impending combat. As the
sole fictional account of the often-overlooked Gulf War, it is raw,
unpredictable, and truly unique."
-- Quang X. Pham, author of "A Sense of Duty: My Father, My American
Journey"
"Breach is an impassioned, eloquent and compelling novel on Marines in the Persian Gulf War-an engaging read. Well done."
-- Mike Tucker, author of "Among Warriors in Iraq" and "Hell is Over - Voices of the Kurds After Saddam"
"Tucker, a veteran of the Gulf War and a major in the
Marine Corps, has written the first novel of that war by
a veteran of the conflict...(He) does a workmanlike job
depicting the endless days of training in the desert and
the frustration of the long wait...Breachis...compelling
and above all a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of
Marines."
-- Tom Miller, Opinion page editor, www.military.com
"The novel Breach seems long overdue, and it is an
exciting and compelling piece that is sure to become a
favorite of both veterans and military enthusiasts...
Breach is an entertaining and insightful reminder of our
military involvement in the Persian Gulf region,
including concerns about weapons of mass destruction and
the still unanswered questions about Gulf War Syndrome.
It helps frame the context of our current conflict,
especially the epilogue that reminds us all of the
looming challenges created when warriors return home
from war. It is a reminder that is still very relevant
today and would fit well in reading lists for our
professional military education programs?not only for
its reference value, but also as a catalyst to motivate
our Marines to write."
-- Major James B. Woulfe, USMC is the author of the books "Into the Crucible" and "Against All Enemies"
"Brooks Tucker has woven an intricate story around the U.S. Marines' invasion of Kuwait in Operation Desert Storm. Don't let the fact that it is labeled as a novel fool you. Breach is as close as historical fiction comes to the real world. Tucker's previous experience as a Marine infantry officer brings reality to the pages of his book. This is a story about Marines, written by a Marine.
Breach starts in the long days of waiting, leading up to the invasion of Kuwait. Tucker takes the reader through the preparations for war and the waiting under the constant threat of chemical attack. Then he tells the story of the Marines of the 2d Marine Division as they breach the vaunted "Saddam Line" and move into Kuwait. The story continues as the Marines press on toward Kuwait City and defeat the Iraqi Army in Kuwait.
"Tucker has added a fictitious set of characters and storyline that personalizes his account of the Marine's military operations in Operation Desert Storm. The personalities and situations compliment the real history by characterizing Marine life in the 1990s. He writes a compelling story that keeps the reader involved.
"His detailed account places the reader smack dab in the middle of a Marine Infantry Platoon as it moves to evict Saddam Hussein from Kuwait. If you want to know what it was like to be a frontline "grunt" in 1991, you must read Breach."
-- Richard Lowry, author of "The Gulf War Chronicles" and "Marines in the Garden of Eden".
